General Concerns
Greg Louganis, winner of five Olympic medals in
diving, first experienced depression at age 12
when a doctor told him that because of knee
damage, he would have to give up his dream of
competing in gymnastics in the Olympics.
Louganis attempted suicide twice before the age
of 18. He then discovered that diving—a sport less
taxing for the knees—was a way for him to
continue in sports. But Louganis felt acute
insecurities and inner conflicts about being gay. In
1987 he found out that he was HIV-positive. For
years, Louganis did not go public about his illness,
fearing it would cost him his diving career. But he
eventually did, and began speaking out about his
life experiences and acting as a positive role
